Save Money This Summer
I had an action packed summer-style weekend and it barely cost a thing. It started Friday night with a potluck BBQ with a few neighbours where we only contributed a big bowl of pasta salad and a few hot dog buns. Saturday we played in our local park before watching the parade go by (Picture below). Sunday was spent mowing the lawn, planting a few vegetables and watching the kids play in the paddling pool (Happier picture below).
While this type of low-cost weekend might be more rare than I like to admit, it was great to see how much fun our entire family could have on such a low-budget and also how much there is to do in the lower mainland when the summer comes around.
There are tons of ways to save money in the summer, a simple Google search will show you, but here is a list of 5 that I will actually do this year. Lastly, I share one way to save money all year around.
Grow your own food - Neither my wife or I have a green thumb so we will start small with a few tomato plants, carrots, pumpkins and a few herbs.Hopefully some of that survives and we can expand our crop next year.
Reduce the cable/internet bill – It is no secret that the more you call your provider the cheaper you can get your rate but I will actually go through the process. We won’t miss cable in the summer (maybe at all) so if it helps save money, then consider it gone.
Enjoy to Lower Mainland – We are so lucky living in an area so full of free/cheap activities. Whether it is as simple as visiting the local waterpark and petting zoo or packing a picnic and heading to the beach, there are plenty of options to create a great day on a budget in BC.
Easy with the AC – It is the same advice as saving money in the winter on heating, just in reverse. Increase the temperature 1-2 degrees and you will save hundreds. Also, get a timer so that you aren’t cooling your house when you don’t need to. Lastly, close closet and spare room doors/vents when the AC is on to save even more.
Dine together – Rather than heading out to a restaurant, fire up the BBQ, set up the patio furniture and enjoy the company of your friends, neighbours and family, without getting the bill at the end of the night. Potlucks are a great way for larger groups to come together as well. With the money you saved on dinner you can probably sit back, relax and enjoy another glass of wine.
Each of these tips could save you hundreds of dollars over the course of the summer but there is one tip that could possibly save you hundreds of dollars each and every month of the year. With one recent client I was able to save them over $5,000/year. How much could you be saving?
